Vodka 101: Everything You Need to Know About the World’s Favorite Spirit

What is Vodka?

Vodka is one of the most famous alcoholic drinks in the world, so it's clear that people love it. Early records show that the first version of Vodka was made in the early 1400s. For many years, Poland and Russia claimed ownership of the liquor.

This clear spirit became popular in Russia and Poland, but now people all over the world distill and drink it. Vodka is a neutral spirit that doesn't have a unique taste, smell, color, or personality. It's a great base for drinks and a safe liquor to mix at home.

In the past, vodka was used to treat health problems. It was often used to treat wounds, kill germs, and bring down fevers. People drink vodka all the time these days, but here's a fun fact: vodka can also heal a jellyfish sting, get rid of sneaker smells, clean mold spots, and cleanse hands!

How is Vodka made?

A method called distillation is used to make vodka. Unlike some other drinks, it can be made from almost any crop that has sugar or starch in it, like corn, rye, wheat, molasses, and potatoes.

Vodka is sometimes made from beets and grapes, like the first Vodka that was made in Russia. Water and yeast are two other important factors for making vodka. After the evaporation is done, the vodka is filtered.

In the past, most vodka was made without any flavoring. However, as vodka became more popular as a relaxed drink, flavored vodka has become much more popular over the last few years. If you want flavored vodka, brands like Vodka Cruiser and Billson's are well-known for making it.

How to drink Vodka?

Vodka can be drunk in a number of different ways, just like many other spirits. If you like to drink a lot, use shot cups and vodka that is at room temperature. You can take it slowly and enjoy it, or you can drink it all at once like a shot. You can put your vodka in the fridge to make it a little thicker if you want to.

On the other hand, if you like cocktails, mix your vodka into one. It's easy to make some popular vodka drinks, like the Cosmopolitan, the Vodka Martini, or the Vodka Tonic. Grapefruit, orange, lime, and lemon juices are good sources of vitamin C that can be added to booze.

If you just want a light bottle of vodka for fun, you can buy one that is already mixed with flavoring and relax.
